Pipette Preventative Maintenance and Calibration

Cleaning: Regular decontamination of the pipette’s exterior and interior components to prevent buildup, cross-contamination, or corrosion.
Seal and O-ring Inspection: Checking for wear, cracks, or deformation that can cause air leaks and volume errors.
Lubrication: Applying appropriate grease to moving parts (when specified by the manufacturer) to maintain smooth operation.
Leak Testing: Ensuring that pipettes maintain proper aspiration without air bubbles or drips.
Storage Practices: Keeping pipettes upright on stands to avoid damage and prevent liquid from entering the body.

Gravimetric Method (Primary): Dispensed liquid is weighed using a calibrated balance, and results are converted to volume using water density tables. This is the industry-standard method per ISO 8655.
Performance Checks: Assessing both accuracy (how close the dispensed volume is to the target) and precision (consistency across repeated dispenses).
Tolerance Limits: Results are compared against ISO 8655 or manufacturer specifications. If errors exceed limits, adjustments are made, or the pipette is serviced.
Documentation: Calibration certificates are issued to prove traceability to national standards, supporting ISO, GLP/GMP, or accreditation requirements.
